Celebrate Fall in the Highlands

After a hot, wet summer that seemed endless, it’s Fall in Louisville and time for some great festivals. Who ever thought they were just a summer thing?  From October 1 – 9th, we will celebrate the annual Week in Highlands.  This area is one where people do a lot of celebrating all year long in the many bars and restaurants along Bardstown Rd., but the special week offers music, food, arts and crafts, and many other events designed to make you glad it’s Fall. Some of the events will also benefit Highlands Community Ministries.

Here’s what’s going on:

Saturday, October 1:  The 5K Highlands Cup Run/Walk started at Douglass Blvd. Community Church, went to Big Rock in Cherokee Park.  Racers and supporters enjoyed a pancake breakfast at the church, all in support of Highlands Community Ministries.

Sunday, October 2: Back at Big Rock, the Highlands-Douglass Big Rock Jazz & Blues Fest, from 2-7 pm  2 to 7 p.m offers music by Stella Vees; FattLabb; and Piano Jazz Summit featuring Harry Pickens, Phil DeGreg, Luke Gillespie and Steve Allee, as well as a vintage Jaguar car show.

Thursday, October 6: To be held at in Frazier Hall Bellarmine University from  5:30 to 8 p.m., Empty Bowls, , offers a meal with handmade pottery, plus a  silent auction to benefit Highlands Community Ministries Individual and Family Assistance Program.

Friday, October 7: In preparation for the big Belknap Fall Festival tomorrow, there will be food plus music by Earbone.

Saturday, October 8:
17th Belknap Fall Festival, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. at historic Douglass Loop, 2200 block of Bardstown Road, Harvard and Yale drives and Wibben Avenue; will feature 100 booths of juried arts and crafts, plus family activities, educational area, food and live music by the High Rollers, Blackberry Jam, Leaving London, Satchel’s Pawn Shop and Tyrone Cotton.

Sunday, October 9:
Wrapping up the week, 10th Farmington Harvest Festival will be held from noon to 5 p.m. at Farmington Historic Plantation, 3033 Bardstown Road. There will be live music by Johnny Berry and the Outliers and The King Bees; food from Louisville Food Trucks Mozzapi, Holy Mole and Little Cheezers; farmers market; Comfy Cow ice cream; Confederate and Union battle re-enactments; petting zoo and pony rides; and more local vendors and family activities.

While you’re in the Highlands, make sure to check out the new mural painted on the side of the Wine Market building at 1200 Bardstown Road.  Bearing the words “The Highlands: Weird, Independent & Proud,” the design — by graphic designer Bryan Todd of Houston Acres and sign painter Kirby Stafford of Danville — was selected from among 16 entries. The Highlands Commerce Guild selected the site. The new mural fits in well with the Keep Louisville Weird, a campaign designed four years ago by the Louisville Independent Business Association (LIBA) to emphasize the importance of buying local.
